REPORT: 262’s MM Degree at Stony Creek No. 5

Stony Creek No. 5                 Three new MMs and the WM!

On Saturday, September 25, Ann Arbor-Fraternity 262 took the lodge on the road  to visit Stony Creek No. 5 in Rochester Hills for a special Master Mason degree day. Stony Creek  No. 5 holds a special place in Michigan Masonic history. Despite Grand Master Lewis Cass’s order, it was the only Michigan lodge to keep the light of Freemasonry alive during the dark years of the Morgan Affair (1830 to 1840). Stony Creek’s tiler, Daniel B. Taylor, is particularly remembered for his constancy. It is said that he would always light a candle in the lodge room on meeting nights and sit and read his newspaper if no one showed up.

We raised three new Master Masons that Saturday morning before knocking off to a nearby pub. After that, we took a tour of the local cemetery to see Stony Creek’s first cornerstone and Brother Taylor’s grave and then over to Mount Moriah, the hill on which the first lodge was constructed. It was a marvelous and moving day. Thanks again to SW Chris Peace of Stony Creek No. 5 for his assistance with our degree work and the wonderful historical talk and tour he provided.
